Grief on World Mental Health Day 10th October 2025

Grief affects all aspects of health: mind, body, and spirit, especially when a close family member dies.

Usually the impact is greatest during the first weeks and months, when you may just "go through the motions" oscillating between feeling numb and feeling totally overwhelmed by powerful emotions. You may neglect your physical needs or adopt unhealthy habits to numb yourself.

Family may not be able to offer enough support while each member is also grieving in their own way. Friends may be supportive during the first days and weeks but may be unable to sustain that over the long term. You may feel pressure to "get over it" and realise that you are changed and no longer have anything in common. You need deep compassion and understanding for your grief, not a superficial friendship.

Mindset Vitality's mission is to end this isolation. We give our Bereavement Friendship Group attendees a safe space where they can meet and chat with others who understand the depth and width of grief.

Although the sadness continues, healing modalities can build resilience and help the bereaved to cope with life without their loved one.

There is no magic cure for grief. It is something that we all have to face at some point in our lives. It is not a mental illness but a natural response to profound loss.

We can help you to learn ways to return to your normal range, instead of remaining Stuck on "On" or Stuck on "Off".

A diagram explaining how a traumatic event, such as grief over the death of a loved one, can push us out of our normal range of feeling.
Can you recognise yourself at either extreme?

Complete the Grief Self- Assessment to receive a personal reply and find out how we can help you break these patterns and cope in healthier ways.
